| AUTISM CAMPUS AT
THE CENTER FOR DISCOVERY
Harris, NY
Site Planning: Dirtworks, NYC
Architecture: Turner Brooks, AIA
The autism campus at the Center for Discovery is a new component of this
pediatric facility in Harris, NY, which will service up to 100 autistic
children in a residential compound that will include housing, education
facilities, equine therapy, and pristine forests. Because of the special
needs of this population, planning considerations needed to include specialized
parameters for interior design and for the relationship between interior
and exterior spaces. Interaction with the pristine natural environment
which surrounds this site was considered fundamental to its theurapeutic
function.
The feng shui component consisted in an analysis of the site and in diagrammatic
recomendations for ideal placement of functions and traffic patterns.
This analysis was then interpreted by the site planners and integrated
into the Master Planning initiatives for the campus as a whole.
