MATAGIRI SPIRITUAL CENTER Phoenicia, NY The Matagiri Spiritual Center is a project initiated by The Mother, the now departed collaborator and companion to Sri Aurobindo, one of the most venerated saints in India. Conceived as a companion to the Aurobindo ashram in Pondicherri, this center is to serve the spiritual needs of the Aurobindo community in the northeastern United States. The conception for this spiritual center includes residential facilities, a communal dining space, meditation rooms, conference and lecture facilities and a nature walk that encircles the 100-plus acres of property. Scattered on the land are also retreat huts for those undergoing privations as part of their spiritual quest. Our contribution consisted in determining optimal locations for building sites on the property, distribution of these structures on the landscape and the creation of prototypes for the various functions. Special attention was placed upon the design of the main prayer and meditation hall, which is to guard the relics of the Mother and of Sri Aurobindo, bequeathed to the community upon their passing.
