BELLEVUE HOSPITAL
INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Manhattan, NY

Design: G5 Architects

Located in the very center of Manhattan, Bellevue Hospital has served the city of New York as its primary trauma center, and has gathered over the years a reputation for innovation and front-line expertise. The new Intensive Care Unit is part of a reorganization of services in the new model of Intensivist Medicine, a management model for intensive medicine which brings under one umbrella the previously disparate specialties of intensive care in the departments of Osteopathy, Trauma, Neurology, Cardiology, and Surgery. Whereas these services were previously segregated and clustered with other services within the department floors, they will now be part of one single floor under the supervision of Intensivist Managers.

Because intensive medicine is by definition state-of-the-art and relies heavily on advanced technology, the challenge consisted in balancing the technological needs of this type of medicine with the need for a more human environment in which patients may recuperate at improved rates and without the encroachment of dementia and other intensive care-related complications. The idea was to create environments which would mimic the natural world to the furthest degree possible within the technical limitations.
